Air purifier buying guide for your room

Use this air purifier buying guide to compare three exact models. Start with room size, then weigh app controls and replacement filters. The biggest coverage number is not always the most useful one.

Start with your priority

  • Your room comes first.
Use CADR and a stated air-change rate before comparing headline coverage.
  • Your controls come next.
Choose phone control if you will use it. Check the exact standard or smart variant.
  • Your filters are an ongoing cost.
Find the replacement part before buying the machine.

Air purifier buying guide: compare the same measurements

CFM means cubic feet per minute. ACH means air changes per hour. Figures are manufacturer specifications, not measurements made by FasterBuyers. Sources: DREO 530S specifications, DREO 539 specifications, Levoit Eleva 300X specifications.

Match the purifier to your room

First, measure the space you actually want to serve. A 10-by-20-foot room is 200 square feet. Include connected areas in an open layout; a doorway does not turn one purifier into a whole-home system.

The EPA's sizing chart pairs 200 square feet with at least 130 CFM and 300 square feet with 195 CFM. Those estimates assume an 8-foot ceiling. A higher ceiling calls for more airflow. Read the EPA sizing guide.

Next, compare the same air-change rate. One ACH describes one room-volume of air per hour. At 4.8 ACH, that volume passes through about every 12.5 minutes. These labels describe different workloads, even when the box shows a larger area in bold.

For example, a 300-square-foot room sits above both the 530S and Eleva's published high-frequency room ratings. Start with a larger rated model rather than choosing between these two on the 967- or 1,200-square-foot headline.

Finally, consider the fan speed you will use. Lower speed filters less air. Check noise at your intended setting instead of pairing a maximum airflow claim with the quietest sleep-mode figure.

Three models, three buying decisions

App control for a smaller room

DREO 530S

You get a published 130 CFM CADR, a PM2.5 display and app control. DREO pairs that airflow with a 201-square-foot room refreshed about every 12.4 minutes. The separate 967-square-foot figure uses just one air change per hour.

Choose it if: your room is around 200 square feet and you want schedules or controls on your phone.

Look elsewhere if: your priority is a much larger open space. A low-speed sleep setting does not deliver the maximum CADR.

Check the standard version carefully

DREO 539 / DR-HAP009

This standard 539 has a PM2.5 display, Auto mode and a 12-hour timer. DREO lists 1,176 square feet at one air change per hour. Its text specification table does not state a CADR, so that area alone cannot support a like-for-like airflow ranking.

Choose it if: you prefer controls on the unit and can confirm a suitable room rating before ordering.

Look elsewhere if: you need verified airflow at a stated CADR or expect the separate 539S smart model. Match DR-HAP009 on the listing.

Separate particle and carbon filters

Levoit Eleva 300X

Levoit publishes a 161 CFM CADR and a 250-square-foot rating at 4.8 air changes per hour. The VeSync app supports control, while the sensor reports PM1.0, PM2.5 and PM10. Its particle and carbon filters can be replaced separately.

Choose it if: you want more published airflow than the 530S and separate filter replacement choices.

Look elsewhere if: you want one simple cartridge budget. Price both filter types, and check the carbon option included in your bundle.

Compare filter costs before checkout

Your filter budget depends on the parts, delivery charges and replacement schedule. A useful estimate is: current filter price × replacements per year, plus shipping. Repeat that calculation for each separate filter. Use your manual and filter condition to choose the schedule.

  • 530S: match the 530S / DR-HAP010S filter and color compatibility. A similar-looking DREO cartridge may fit a different model.
  • 539: the 539 / DR-HAP009 White filter page explicitly names the standard model. Check the filter code for your color before paying.
  • Eleva 300X: budget for both the HEPA filter and your chosen carbon filter. The replacement filter range lists distinct carbon options and service intervals.

Levoit's “up to two years” particle-filter claim uses a test endpoint of a 50% CADR decline, with 12 hours of daily use at maximum speed. It does not mean every filter lasts two years in your room. Carbon has its own replacement schedule. See the published test conditions.

Two questions to settle before you buy

Does a particle reading tell you about odors?

No. A particle sensor and a gas or odor sensor measure different things. DREO's 530S FAQ says its PM2.5 sensor does not detect odors or gases. Do not use a blue light as proof that every pollutant is gone. Check the sensor limitation.

What if you need a larger room rating?

Use the same CADR and room-size checks on a larger model. EPA guidance explains the sizing basis. Then browse the air purifier and air-care directory. Check the product type: humidifiers and dehumidifiers solve different problems.

How to use this comparison

Compare the published specifications and linked manufacturer sources before choosing your model. Fit suggestions explain the trade-offs of those features; they are not hands-on test results.
