Fans & room heaters

Decide whether you need air movement or added heat, then check the space and power connection. Published coverage and noise claims should be read with their measurement conditions.

Choose airflow or heat before choosing a device

Fans and heaters serve different needs. A handheld or neck fan is a personal accessory, while a room fan or heater needs a suitable place and power connection.

  • Where you will use it

For a desk or bedside table, compare the base size, controls and cable route. For a handheld fan, check how it will fit in your bag and how you will recharge it.

  • Air direction and controls

Check tilt, oscillation and the controls you can reach from your seat. Compare noise at useful settings. Do not assume a small personal fan can serve an entire room.

  • Heater placement

Before buying a portable electric heater, check the manual’s clearances and a suitable wall outlet. CPSC advises plugging it directly into the wall, rather than a power strip or extension cord.

Questions before you choose

Is a fan a substitute for air conditioning?

A fan moves air; it does not establish the same room-cooling capability as an air conditioner. Pick it for the airflow you need, and check any separate cooling claims for the exact model.

Can a heater share your desk power strip?

Choose a location with a suitable wall outlet and follow the heater’s instructions. Do not plan a portable electric heater setup around an extension cord or power strip.
