Measure how the furniture will be used

Home office furniture needs more than an empty patch of floor. This selection includes desks, a chair, a TV stand and a dresser; compare each against the job and room where you will use it.

  • Desk and chair clearance

Allow room to pull out the chair and open nearby drawers. For a desk with a hutch, check monitor height and the usable work surface, not only the overall width.

  • Screens and accessories

Match a TV stand to the television’s weight and the spacing of its feet. For a desk, check the attachment area before planning a clamp-mounted monitor arm.

  • Storage and assembly

Measure doorways and the route into the room. Check assembly requirements, drawer clearance and the manufacturer’s anchoring instructions before choosing tall or top-heavy furniture.

Questions before you choose

Does a furniture width tell you whether your screen fits?

Not by itself. Compare the screen’s feet or mount, its weight and the support surface. A hutch or shelf can also limit the height and depth available for your monitor.

Why check anchoring before delivery?

You may need a suitable wall position and the correct fixings. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions; CPSC’s Anchor It guidance explains why unsecured furniture and televisions can tip over.
